LUXURY, 700 METERS FROM AN ACTIVE VOLCANO

“It’s more calming then it is unsettling really,” assures Sherwin Lucas when asked about living a few hundred meters from one of the world’s most active volcano.  “Waking up to a panoramic vista of a volcano lying serenely amidst a mist-filled lake has a way of soothing one’s soul.”  The Manila-born Mr. Lucas knows of what he speaks. He has been Resident Manager of Discovery Country Suites Tagaytay for almost two years now and has been responsible for providing stressed city dwellers an out-of-town sanctuary where they can cool their heels and recharge tired nerves.

Discovery Country Suites was once a private country retreat offering a prime view of the lake and volcano.  Its reinvention as a luxury Bed & Breakfast facility was a welcome alternative for the local tourism, especially for the upscale market who is seeking a more sophisticated destination for a weekend experience.  “We’ve benchmarked ourselves with the Bed & Breakfast experience one would have in the charming inns that dot the coastline of  Carmel in California, or the quaint private villas in an Italian countryside,” says Mr. Lucas.  Indeed, one will get a feel for these places with small touches that the Resident Manager, assisted by his impeccably-trained staff, is able to orchestrate for every visiting guest. This include dishes from the celebrated contemporary country cuisine menu  by Colombian corporate chef David Pardo de Ayala at Restaurant Verbena, a nightly complimentary wine and cheese buffet set-up at sun down, and of course, warm milk and chocolate chip cookies delivered to your room before retiring for the night.   When Tagaytay’s cool clime turns nippy, it is not uncommon to see guests lounging by Restaurant Verbena’s fireplace basking in the warmth emanating for the hearth and each other’s company.

Seven uniquely designed suites provide indulgent escapes for harried city refugees. The suites’ interiors reflect the property’s world-class stature such as the Asian-inspired Ceylon, Siam and Nara suites and the continental Andalucia, Saint-Tropez, Nantucket and Oxford suites.  Soft, goose down pillows, feather beds and high thread count sheets make it easy to hibernate with a good book or your favorite DVD movies.

“The volcano notwithstanding, there are many pleasures to be had and experienced here,” assures Mr. Lucas.  “Besides, generations of Taaleños have lived and breathed in this city untouched and blessed by it.   They aren’t worried and there’s no reason why we should be”.

Find out how you can experience the ultimate out-of-town escape by visiting the bed & breakfast’s  website at www.discoverycountrysuites.com or by calling its Manila reservations office at (632) 683.8383.  Special rates for the month of June are available beginning at
